StatesSince the mid-1990s, rapid growth in emerging countries has been coupled with a sharp rise in population, energy consumption and natural resources, as well as rapid urbanization. This has led to a constant rise in CO2 emissions per capita. Emerging countries previously gave little concern to limiting their GHG emissions, but are gradually becoming aware of the devastating impact of climate change and are implementing extensive programs in this area.
AFD Group now operates in several of these countries in order to help improve the management of global public goods in the following sectors:
- The fight against climate change
- Biodiversity preservation
- The fight against emerging and communicable diseases >> Next
NGO and civil societyIn developing countries, civil society organizations are essential partners in efforts – in consultation with national and local authorities – to support the implementation of projects financed by AFD. NGOs, through their innovative approaches to development, benefit from skilled technical expertise in a number of areas and are key partners in combating climate change at the local level >> Next
Local authoritiessIn the fight against climate change and the search for low-carbon development, cities lead reflection on how to build “clean” resource-saving territorial development for the future. Actions are implemented in a number of sectors: transport, energy efficiency, waste management, wastewater treatment, the use of renewable energies, etc. These are sectors where concerted actions and a long-term vision can bring about deep and effective changes >> Next
Local BanksThe private and financial sectors help structure all developing societies. AFD is building partnerships with local banks in order to promote financing for all “clean” services (for example, in the water, energy and transport sectors) and also to increase the share of environmental investments in local banking activity >> Next
