Sustainable tourism in Meru National Park

The Kenyan government decided to conduct a far-reaching program to rehabilitate Meru Park via the Kenya Wildlife Service. The main objectives were to restore security and infrastructure, reintroduce species and revive tourist activity. AFD, in partnership with the FGEF, wished to support the rehabilitation of the Meru protected area by providing technical and financial assistance to KWS. <Find out more>

Peace canal to link the Red Sea and the Dead Sea

The project financed by AFD aims to achieve a sustainable management of water resources, preserve Red Sea and Dead Sea ecosystems and foster communication between the administrations of the relevant countries, donor community and public opinion. <Find out more>

Cambodia - Building against the tides

In 1997 AFD began rehabilitating the Prey Nup polders along with Gret and Handicap international. The project is based on the creation of a farmers' association to manage the infrastructure. In a country marked by collectivism and the Khmer Rouge genocide this social construction is truly original. <Find out more>

AFD supports Diambars

Alain Joyandet, Secretary of State for Cooperation and Francophonie, Jean-Michel Severino, Chief Executive Officer of AFD, and Bernard Lama, President of the Diambars association signed a partnership agreement this morning for the creation of a training center for young footballers in South Africa. <Read press release> <Go to Diambars' website>

AFD opens the Solidaires du monde blog platform

2015 targets: Eight Times Yes!

The “Millennium Declaration” adopted by the UN General Assembly on 8 September 2000 sets eight goals to end poverty and its consequences by 2015. Sustainable Forest Management – Congo Basin

The Congo Basin forests, with some 220 million hectares of tropical forests, are the world’s second largest tropical forest area and house Africa’s most abundant biodiversity.AFD’s operations in the Congo Basin aim to promote sustainable and concerted forest management and thus guarantee economic development while preserving and developing biodiversity. <Find out more>

Support for Senegal’s Corporate Upgrading Program

Since 2005 AFD has been supporting Senegal’s Corporate Upgrading Program which aims to strengthen the economic fabric and development of the country. It involves implementing an upgrading plan tailored to each company and initial results have been very positive. <Find out more>

Supporting the promotion of Cambodian pepper and sugar

Cambodia’s traditional products are a real source of wealth for the country. Kampot pepper and Kampong Speu palm sugar are two such products. AFD has been supporting a project to promote them and increase their exports since 2004. A pepper producer shares his experience. <Find out more>

Developing and protecting the Ifrane cedar forests

Morocco’s Ifrane province is home to the most beautiful cedar forests in the Mediterranean Basin. They are however now under threat of overexploitation. AFD is supporting a large-scale project to protect these forests in close partnership with local populations and other partners. <Find out more>

Supporting Guinea’s potato exports to the subregion

AFD has been supporting potato producers in Guinea since 2005. The “Belle de Guinée” potato is exported to the subregion and helps diversify the country’s exports. A producer shares his experience.

Union for the Mediterranean

Following the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean on 13 July, France will, via AFD, devote 730 million euros to the initiative to finance the implementation of depollution programs and projects in the Mediterranean. <Find out more>

Défis agricoles africains

The Minister for Agriculture Michel Barnier launched the AFD's book "Défis gricoles africains", published by Karthala, during the "Who will feed the world?" Conference, on 3 July in the European Parliament. 1 July: Launch of the French Presidency of the European Union

France took over the Presidency of the European Union on 1 July and over the next six months AFD will be supporting France’s development initiatives. Défis agricoles africains

While many countries have been hit by the current food crisis, this book, published by Karthala, shows that Africa has the resources to become an agricultural giant. Sharp growth in activities to support sustainable development

AFD further pursued its growth in 2007 with 3.5 million euros of commitments. One billion euros were allocated in Sub-Saharan Africa which remains a priority for AFD. Mozambique: supporting Quirimbas National Park

AFD has been supporting the development of Quirimbas National Park in northern Mozambique since 2002. The project, in partnership with the Mozambican State and WWF, involves local populations in the sustainable management of natural resources. <More information> <Access Mozambique Portal>

141 million euros for sustainable development in Tunisia

The French President’s State visit to the Republic of Tunisia (28-30 April) was marked by the signing of several agreements totalling 141 million euros between Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and its Tunisian partners. <More> <Acess the Tunisian Portal>

Launch of the Research and Evaluation Portal

Supporting decentralization in Senegal

Growth support Initiative in Africa

On 28 February 2008, during a visit by the French President to Africa, France launched an Initiative to strengthen economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. This Initiative falls in line with the target of sustainably reaching the Millennium Development Goals. <More>

World Water Day : AFD reiterates its commitment in favour of water and sanitation

Construction of a wind farm in South Africa

A 100 million euro financial agreement with ESKOM, South Africa’s national electricity utility, for the construction of a 100 MW wind farm on Cape West Coast. The farm will be the biggest wind infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa and will provide a partial solution to South Africa’s energy crisis. Supporting Mauritius Island’s economic transition

The gradual disappearance of the sugar and textile trade preferences enjoyed by Mauritius led the country to undertake a far-reaching reform program in order to stem the rise in unemployment and regain strong economic growth. AFD has just allocated new budget support to the State in the form of a €48M loan. Next

Protecting the environment in China

AFD has been operating in China since 2004 and focuses its action on combating climate change. Loans are allocated to projects which reduce CO2 emissions: renewable energy generation, sustainable urban development, low carbon rural development, energy management in industry and services… <New China Portal>
