AFD's triple mission
The French government has tasked AFD with three complementary development missions that AFD
pursues by intervening in all of the sectors of activity with which it is charged:
- Fight poverty by increasing operations in the sectors of water, sanitation, healthcare, education and agriculture, thereby helping to achieve the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.
- Promote economic growth by supporting private enterprise and financial services, and developing infrastructure.
- Preserve Global Public Goods with environment-related interventions to fight climate change and preserve biodiversity, as well as working in the healthcare sector to fight pandemics.
AFD’s financing has tangible impacts:
AFD’s 2007 and 2008 financing commitments will notably contribute to:
- Primary schooling for 11.5 million children, of which 5.6 million girls.
- Provision of drinking water to 4 million people.
- Connection to telecommunications networks for 36 million people.
- Saving 6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year through energy efficiency measures.
